Late 68-yard TD pass lifts Leeds past Guntersville in 5A first-round battle
Conner Nelson connected with sophomore Taylon Gaiter on a 68-yard touchdown bomb with 28 seconds left to lift Leeds over Guntersville 35-28 at home on Friday night at Homer Smiles Stadium in the opening round of the Class 5A state playoffs.
Nelson accounted for 347 total yards for the ninth-ranked Green Wave, but the final explosive play proved to be the biggest as Leeds answered No. 6 Guntersville’s tying touchdown and 2-point conversion with 2:01 left in the game. The Wildcats (9-2) had driven 65 yards for the TD on a 1-yard plunge by quarterback Street Smith, who also hit Cameron Logan for the 2-pointer.
