Las Vegas Raiders retain rookie quarterback from South Alabama

The Las Vegas Raiders had a competition for the starting quarterback job between Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell in training camp. Minshew will be the team’s opening-game starter, and he and O’Connell were the only quarterbacks kept on the Raiders’ 53-man active roster when Las Vegas trimmed its preseason roster to the regular-season limit on Tuesday.

But one of the other three quarterbacks who was in training camp with the Raiders this month has returned to the team as a member of its practice squad – rookie Carter Bradley from South Alabama.

During Las Vegas’ three-game preseason schedule, Bradley completed 17-of-34 passes for 225 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

The rookie finished with a flourish. In the Raiders’ 24-24 tie with the San Francisco 49ers on Friday night, Bradley had four completions in a five-pass span to move Las Vegas 69 yards, and former Auburn standout Daniel Carlson kicked a 43-yard field goal with 16 seconds left to tie the game. (NFL preseason games do not use overtime.)

Bradley was among 14 players from Alabama high schools and colleges (excluding Alabama and Auburn) who had been waived or released in the roster cuts that returned to the NFL as practice-squad members on Wednesday.

Each NFL team had to reduce its 90-player preseason roster to the regular-season limit of 53 active players on Tuesday, and none of the Alabama alumni waived or released were claimed or signed by other teams.

Each NFL team could begin assembling a 16-player practice squad (17 if the team has an International Pathway player) on Wednesday afternoon. Practice-squad members work just as active-roster players do during the week, but they are not eligible to play in the games – with one exception. Each NFL team can elevate two practice-squad players to active status for each game.

On Wednesday, 29 of the 32 NFL teams announced at least partial practice-squad rosters, with these former state players among those signed:

· Carter Bradley, quarterback (South Alabama), Las Vegas Raiders.

· DJ Coleman, defensive end (Jacksonville State), Jacksonville Jaguars.

· Malik Cunningham, wide receiver (Park Crossing), Baltimore Ravens

· Chris Edmonds, defensive back (Samford), Cleveland Browns.

· Neil Farrell Jr., defensive tackle (Murphy), Kansas City Chiefs.

· Jordan Matthews, tight end (Madison Academy), Carolina Panthers.

· DeWayne McBride, running back (UAB), Minnesota Vikings

· Bobby McCain, defensive back (Oxford), Minnesota Vikings.

· Tejhaun Palmer, wide receiver (UAB), Arizona Cardinals.

· Reddy Steward, cornerback (Austin, Troy), Chicago Bears.

· Justyn Ross, wide receiver (Central-Phenix City), Kansas City Chiefs.

· Montrell Washington, wide receiver (Samford), Kansas City Chiefs

· Jalen Wayne, wide receiver (Spanish Fort, South Alabama), Green Bay Packers.

· Chandler Wooten, linebacker (Auburn), Carolina Panthers.

Each player returned to the team that had waived or released him.
