Larry Blakeney, 2 Troy players College Hall nominees
Troy has three candidates on the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024 ballot, which the National Football Foundation released on Monday.
Larry Blakeney is among the nine nominees on the NCAA FBS coaches portion of the ballot, and Al Lucas and Freddie Thomas are among the 101 divisional-player candidates for the next College Football Hall of Fame class.
A three-sport star at Gordo High School and a former Auburn quarterback, defensive back and assistant coach, Blakeney served as Troy’s head coach from 1991 through 2014 as the Trojans moved from NCAA Division II to NCAA FCS and NCAA FBS.
As Blakeney compiled a 178-113-1 record, the Trojans won the Sun Belt Conference championship annually from 2006 through 2010 under his leadership after winning three Southland Conference titles. Troy went to the FCS playoffs seven times and bowls five times under Blakeney’s guidance.
Lucas played defensive tackle for Blakeney-coached teams from 1996 through 1999. In his senior season, the two-time All-American won the Buck Buchanan Award as the best defensive player in NCAA FCS. The Trojans won the Southland Conference championship that season, as they had in his freshman campaign in 1996.
Lucas also scored nine touchdowns during his career as a goal-line ball-carrier.
A defensive back, Thomas came to Troy as a walk-on in 1984, when the Trojans won the NCAA Division II championship by beating North Dakota State 18-17. He left Troy as a champ, too, with the Trojans capturing the NCAA Division II crown in 1987 with a 31-17 victory over Portland State.
Thomas earned All-American recognition in 1986 and 1987.
