Lanny Poffo, wrestler and brother of Randy Savage, dead at 68

Legendary professional wrestler Lanny Poffo has died, according to reports.

He was 68.

No cause of death has been reported.

The death of Poffo, who is the brother of the “Macho Man” Randy Savage, was first reported by WWE Hall of Famer “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan.

“With a very, very heavy heart, I’ve been asked to let everyone know about the passing of our friend and colleague Lanny Poff, The Genius,” Duggan posted.

“RIP Lanny.”

“The Genius” — a highly intelligent and arrogant bad guy — was perhaps Poffo’s most popular gimmick in the WWE. He wore a cap and gown like you would see in an academic setting. He was also known as “Leaping” Lanny Poffo.

His characters in the ring often recited poems that he had written, and outside the ring he published a collection of poems and limericks.

Poffo began wrestling in 1974 and joined the WWE in 1985.

The company acknowledged his death with a short post. After saying it was saddened to learn of his death, the company wrote: “While he achieved some success as a fan favorite reading his own poetry and throwing Frisbees to the crowd, he reached new heights as The Genius while managing Mr. Perfect.

“WWE extends its condolences for Poffo’s family, friends and fans.”
