Lane Kiffin latest coach to question clock rule, cites Morgan Wallen, Taylor Swift concerts

College football coaches are speaking up over a new clock rule which they say limits the number of snaps.

UCLA coach Chip Kelly made a point to take a jab at the rule during an on-the-field interview in the midst of his team’s opening game against Coastal Carolina.

The clock no longer stops after teams get first downs unless it’s the last two minutes of the half. The goal is to shorten games, but some coaches have taken issue with it.

“This new rule, it’s crazy,” Kelly said during his interview. “We had four drives in the first half. This game goes fast. Hope you guys are selling a lot of commercials.”

On Tuesday, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin added his opinion on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

“So do you guys buy tickets to go see ⁦Morgan Wallen or Taylor Swift or your favorite concerts and want a few less songs at the end?” he asked. “With all the issues in college football this is what you actually made a change to?”

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham told reporters after his 24-11 win over Florida that there “wasn’t a lot of snaps.”

“I guess if they were trying to tone that down, they accomplished their objective,” Whittingham said. “Seemed like they made up for it with more commercials. There were commercials every two minutes. I don’t know what that’s all about. I guess we’ve got to pay the bills.”
