Lane Kiffin knows Josh Heupelâs pain with officiating when playing Alabama: âI know that feelingâ
Josh Heupel made it very clear he wasn’t happy with the officials Saturday night in No. 17 Tennessee’s 34-20 loss at No. 11 Alabama
During his postgame press conference, the Tennessee coach was asked about the second-half officiating. A reporter said the Vols were “having to play two-hand touch,” while Alabama was allowed to “play Mortal Kombat.”
Heupel tapped his fingers on the podium, and, after an uncomfortable pause, he simply said, “Next question, yeah. Was that long enough silence?”
Well, Ole Miss coach – and former Vols coach – Lane Kiffin couldn’t help himself. The Rebels coach is coming off a little trolling momentum after his team defeated Auburn 28-21 on Saturday night. His team posted a video, throwing shade at Hugh Freeze and Auburn.
On Sunday, Kiffin reposted Heupel’s response to the officiating question, stating the following:
“I love this reaction,” he posted. “Been in that same press conference in Orange in that same stadium. I know that feeling.”
Tennessee was flagged for eight penalties for 55 yards. Meanwhile, Alabama was called for one penalty for 5 yards. In fact, Alabama’s penalty was an illegal snap in the third quarter, which followed back-to-back penalties on Tennessee’s defense for jumping offsides.
As of Sunday, Alabama ranks No. 53 in the nation for fewest penalties per game. The Tide is averaging roughly 6.2 penalties per game for 49.12 yards per game.
The Vols are No. 114 in the nation in fewest penalties per game. They are averaging eight flags per game and 67.14 penalty yards per game. Ole Miss ranks No. 113, averaging 65.14 yards per game and 7.28 flags per game.
