Lane Kiffin goes scorched earth on NIL: âYou just told donors you could pay playersâ
Lane Kiffin didn’t hold back when discussing what is wrong with name, image and likeness.
The Ole Miss coach used his opening statements Thursday during SEC media days in Nashville to lay out the issues with an NIL system he says is broken.
“It’s a poor system that’s getting worse,” Kiffin said Thursday.
To be clear, Kiffin is for players being compensated. He admits to taking advantage of the transfer portal. The problem, he explains, is when you combine the two, it creates problems.
“You just told donors you could pay players,” he quipped.
Here’s the issue as the former Alabama offensive coordinator sees it. As guys have multiple chances to transfer, they can follow the money, much like free agency.
“When you add the NIL, and, at the same time, we’ve created – I’ve said it before – different caps and no luxury taxes,” he said. “Now, we have professional sports. That’s what’s been created now.
“There are no caps to what guys can make or payrolls, so when this first came out, I said, whatever programs have the most aggressive boosters with the most players are going to get the best players. Now, we are adding some states that don’t follow the NCAA. We have universities giving their money to the collectives. …
“It’s where we are at.”
Kiffin marveled that no other sport on any other level has a comparable system.
“Every year, you can opt into free agency twice a year,” he said.
What if, Kiffin contends, guys like Tom Brady, Lionel Messi or LeBron James could be a free agent twice a year and have no long-term contracts?
“It has created a lot of issues,” he said.
With the said, he doesn’t have the answers. He just knows the sport isn’t in a good place right.
“I’m not complaining because we take advantage, obviously, of free agency,” he said. “It isn’t good for college football, these overhauls of college rosters. It really isn’t in the best interest of college football.”
In the end, the schools with booster with the deepest pockets and schools in states that allow for universities to donate to collectives have the NIL and transfer markets cornered.
When asked where Ole Miss boosters rank in the league, Kiffin broke the tension.
“I’m not about to start putting rankings out on boosters from top to bottom in the conference” he said as the gathered media laughed. “God, I want to so bad.
“The commissioner (Greg Sankey) said, ‘Remember, we’ve grown a lot. You don’t have to respond to every question to show everyone you have the answer.’”
