Landon Dickerson signs for $84 million, eyes new mower

Former Alabama All-American Landon Dickerson has signed a four-year, $84 million contract extension with the Philadelphia Eagles that included a $20 million signing bonus and $50 million in guaranteed money.

“I have a financial advisor for a reason,” Dickerson said on Tuesday when asked what he planned to do with his new wealth. “I don’t know. I may go get a new lawnmower. Something I’ve been looking into. A zero-turn.”

The Eagles moved to sign their left to a long-term contract even though Dickerson had a season remaining on his rookie deal – a four-year, $8.657 million contract signed after Philadelphia selected him with the 37th choice in the 2021 NFL Draft.

At a Tuesday press conference, Dickerson said he appreciated Eagles general manager Howie Roseman moving to keep him in Philadelphia as soon as he was eligible for a new deal.

“Him reaching out, especially this early, to my agent, letting them know that they wanted to keep me around really means a lot to somebody,” Dickerson said. “Especially in this line of work — you never know when your last day’s going to be or anything. It’s kind of a volatile area, so really just kind of like job security, knowing that for the next four or five years, this is where I’m at. This is home.”

Dickerson earned Pro Bowl selection in each of the past two seasons as the Eagles’ left guard.

The $21 million annual average value of Dickerson’s contract extension is a high mark for a guard. The only guard who has a contract with more total value than Dickerson’s is the Atlanta Falcons’ Chris Lindstrom, who is playing on a five-year, $102.5 million deal.

“To me, it just reiterates how much the coaches and Howie and Mr. (Jeffrey) Lurie (the team owner) want to keep me around here,” Dickerson said. “And I absolutely love being here. I really didn’t plan on going anywhere else. You don’t have to tell Howie that, though. It just shows a lot of respect and how much trust they have in me to continue to grow as a player and develop and do good things for this team and this city.”

Dickerson earned unanimous All-American recognition and won the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s best center for Alabama’s undefeated 2020 CFP national championship team.

Earlier this month, Jason Kelce announced his retirement after 13 seasons as Philadelphia’s center.

Dickerson said he didn’t know if he’d be shifted to center for the 2024 season, but he thought there were “a lot of good options in that offensive-line room of guys that can move to center.”
