Landmark Alabama farmer’s market won’t open for 2024 season

The Burris Farm Market in Loxley, a landmark for many vacationers visiting Alabma’s beaches, will not open this year, the owners have announced.

Located on Ala. 59 not far south of I-10, the market has been a popular stop for decades, offering fresh produce and other foods. Its closure was announced in a Facebook post late Thursday. It said:

The Burris Family has been farming and running our business here since 1986. It has been a pleasure to service the local community for all these years. But it is time to move on. So, we are not opening up this year.

We have enjoyed farming and providing fresh local fruits and vegetables for all these years. Also need to thank the customers that have shopped and supported us all these years.

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK OUR EMPLOYEES.

We still have our peaches that we should be harvesting in May, please look for us when that happens.

THANK YOU, GREG, KAY AND DREW BURRIS

The response of many patrons might be “Oh no, not again.” Greg and Kay Burris sold the name to new owners in 2006. The market continued until August 2018, when the owners announced it was closing. They had filed for bankruptcy in 2017 and said that the amount of traffic diverted by the new Beach Express and increased supermarket competition were factors. The company’s president also had run into unrelated legal trouble.

The Burris family still owned the Loxley site, and founder Greg Burris, then 65, quickly announced that he was stepping out of retirement. He said he planned to ramp up production at his farm over the next few years and that his son Drew would help operate it.

As the family’s post indicated, the market has not yet opened for the 2024 season. It shut down for winter on Nov. 29.
