Kroger selling more than 400 stores in 17 states: What grocery locations are being sold?
Two major grocery store chains are selling hundreds of locations as part of a sought-after merger.
Kroger and Albertsons are shedding as many as 413 grocery stores across 17 states and the District of Columbia. The prospective buyer, C&S Wholesale, is a company that supplies independent grocers including Piggy Wiggly and military bases, among others, reports indicate.
Eight distribution centers, two offices and five private-label brands are included in the deal.
“Following the announcement of our proposed merger with Albertsons Cos., we embarked on a robust and thoughtful process to identify a well-capitalized buyer who will operate as a fierce competitor and ensure divested stores and their associates will continue serving their communities in the ways they do today. C&S achieves all these objectives,” Rodney McMullen, chairman and CEO of The Kroger Co. said in a statement.
Kroger and Albertsons agreed to merge last October with Kroger assuming $4.7 billion of Albertson’s debt. The move will require federal approval, a process that could take until 2024.
