Killers remain free more than year after teen, 49-year-old man gunned down in Birmingham neighborhood

It’s been more than a year since gunfire erupted in a southwest Birmingham neighborhood, killing a 49-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl.

Ed Franklin Harris and Yasmine Wright were fatally shot on Jan. 8, 2022, and the killer or killers remain at large.

Birmingham police again are asking for the public’s help to get justice for Harris and Yasmine.

“When a child is killed, no one should stay quiet,’’ Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said shortly after the slayings.

The shots rang out about 9:15 p.m. at 16th Way S.W. and Matt Leonard Drive.

Two people were killed, including an innocent 16-year-old girl, when a gunfight took place in southwest Birmingham Saturday, Jan. 8, 2021.

When police arrived at the scene, they found Harris unresponsive in the roadway close to a motorcycle. Another vehicle was found in a nearby grassy area.

It appeared Harris turned onto 16th Way and laid down the motorcycle. At that point, the suspect or suspects reportedly exited the vehicle and fired shots at Harris.

He was pronounced dead on the scene.

That vehicle had been abandoned, and police used tracking dogs in search of the suspect or suspects but to no avail.

Moments later, police received word that a 16-year-old gunshot victim had shown up at a nearby Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Station 25 on Wilson Road. BFRS took Yasmine from there to UAB Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Yasmine, a Wenonah High School student, had just gotten off work at the Birmingham Zoo. Her aunt, Janice Wright, had picked her up after work and they were returning home when the shots entered their vehicle from the same incident that killed the motorcyclist.

Harris was a father, brother and uncle and was loved, according to his family.

His sister, Earleana Stanley, said, “He had a good heart. He would give you his last.”

Police at the time said they were looking for at least two to three suspects. Weapons were recovered from the scene.
