Kidnapped Birmingham mother shot, put in trunk, records state; boyfriend charged with capital murder

A capital murder warrant has now been issued for the boyfriend of a Birmingham mother of four who was kidnapped early Thursday and found shot to death the following day.

The warrant was issued Sunday for Cedric Dewayne Robertson, 37. Killed was 40-year-old Nakita Chantryce “Kita” Davidson.

Robertson, a convicted felon, was initially charged with first-degree kidnapping. Court records indicate he deliberately crashed into Davidson’s vehicle, shot her, and then drove away in her vehicle after putting her into the trunk.

Records also state Robertson’s own vehicle, as well as his cell phone, were found at the crash site, which was near Elmwood Cemetery.

Robertson also has other prior felony convictions and an extensive arrest history dating back to 2004.

He taken into custody about 6 p.m. Friday by the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Birmingham Police Department’s Crime Reduction Team, and Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies. His arrest ended a manhunt that began roughly 36 hours earlier.

The investigation began when South Precinct officers were dispatched at 2:11 a.m. Thursday on a report of a two-vehicle wreck at Sixth Avenue S.W. and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Wade said officers arrived to find evidence of a possible shooting.

Police earlier released a photo of a pink Nike sneaker, and that photo helped to quickly identify Davidson, whose family recognized the shoe and contacted Birmingham police.

Davidson’s vehicle – a 2008 burgundy Saturn Outlook – was driven away from the scene. She was found in that vehicle Friday afternoon in a heavily wooded area off of 18th Place S.W.

The discovery was made by the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force and Birmingham Police Department’s Crime Reduction Team.

Dozens of Davidson’s family members waited outside the crime scene location for hours, hoping for the best but for preparing for the worst. They erupted into cries of anguish when their worst fears were confirmed.

Davidson’s brother, Laderrius Swain, spoke with AL.com earlier Friday and said he believed his sister had been killed.

“She is one good-hearted person,’’ said her brother, Laderrius Swain. “She would give you the shirt off her back.”

Swain said his sister had been dating Roberts for less than a year. “Her plan was to get away from him,’’ he said. “That’s what she was trying to do that night.”

Swain has launched a GoFundMe to help with his sister’s burial.

“Her life was tragically cut short due to a senseless act of violence,’’ Swain wrote, “leaving four children without their mother.”
