Kevin Gates, Sexyy Red, Flo Milli, Rick Ross on lineup for new festival in Alabama

Headliners Kevin Gates and Sexyy Red are among the big names announced for Magic City Flow Fest in Alabama.

Other performers on the lineup for the new hip-hop festival — set for Oct. 18 at Birmingham’s Legion Field — include Mobile native Flo Milli, Rick Ross, Waka Flocka Flame, Ying Yang Twins, Young Nudy, Paul Wall, London On Da Track, Murda Beatz, Haarper, Anycia and Chophead.

In a press release, organizers from Iron Hills Productions called Magic City Flow Fest a “kickoff party for Magic City Classic Week, in partnership with the City of Birmingham.”

Tickets for Magic City Flow Fest are on sale Friday via the festival website. Prices are $109.95 for Early Bird General Admission, $139.95 for Early Bird GA+, $249.95 for Early Bird VIP, $999.95 for a Boss Pass (called the “ultimate VIP experience”), $14,999.95 for an Ultra Lounge Booth for 25 people.

A Student Bundle costs $109.95, and includes general admission tickets to Magic City Flow Fest and the Magic City Classic. A student ID is required for entry, organizers said.

The Magic City Classic, of course, is the annual HBCU game featuring Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University, traditionally held at Legion Field. This year’s Amazon Magic City Classic is set for Oct. 25 at Legion Field, according to the event website.

Typically, the Saturday football game is preceded by several days of entertainment events in the Birmingham metro area, including concerts, parties, comedy shows, tailgates, rallies, radio show broadcasts and more.

Magic City Flow Fest should be a high-profile addition to the hoopla surrounding the game, which usually brings star power to Birmingham. In previous years, celebrity ambassadors for the Classic have included Omari Hardwick, Ice Cube, Bell Biv DeVoe, Bootsy Collins, LL Cool J, Tom Joyner, Wendy Williams, Sinbad, Vivica A. Fox, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley and Willie Mays.

Magic City Flow Fest also is the latest event from a team that incudes Johnny Grimes, one of the organizers of Furnace Fest and the Iron Hills Country Music Festival.

Furnace Fest and Iron Hills both are scheduled in October at Sloss Furnaces. Furnace Fest, a three-day event that focuses on heavy rock, thrash, punk and metal, is scheduled Friday through Sunday, Oct. 3-5. Iron Hills, a two-day festival featuring country artists, is set for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11-12.

With the addition of Magic City Flow Fest the following Sunday, that makes three music festivals on three consecutive weekends from Grimes and his colleagues.

“Iron Hills Productions is committed to making Birmingham a destination for live music in the South,” Allena Beall, COO of Iron Hills Productions, said via the press release. “We’re excited to partner with the City of Birmingham on Magic City Flow to kick off Magic City Classic Week. With three back-to-back festivals this October — Furnace Fest, Iron Hills and Magic City Flow — we’re not just throwing festivals. It’s about building culture, growing community and helping put Birmingham on the map as a destination for live music.”

Legion Field, 400 Graymont Ave. West, is an iconic landmark in Birmingham that celebrated its 100th year in 2027. Most people think of sports when Legion Field is mentioned, as it’s the longtime home of the Classic.

For about four decades, Legion Field also was the site of the Iron Bowl, the much-anticipated game pitting the Alabama Crimson Tide against the Auburn Tigers. Other sports events, such as flag football for the 2022 World Games, have been held at Legion Field, as well.

The stadium, which is owned by the City of Birmingham, has seen its share of big-name concert acts in the past, such as the Rolling Stones, U2 and Pink Floyd. More recently, Legion Field has been the site of music events such as 2015’s Funk Fest and concerts in the former Jazz in the Park series.
