Kermit Davis out as Ole Miss basketball coach
Ole Miss has parted ways with basketball coach Kermit Davis, the school announced Friday morning.
The Rebels are 10-18 overall and 2-13 in the SEC — tied for last place — headed into Saturday’s home game with LSU. Davis’ ouster comes two days after an overtime loss to Auburn, Ole Miss’ fifth straight defeat and 10th in 11 games.
The 63-year-old Davis went 74-79 in five seasons at Ole Miss. The Rebels went 20-13 and made the NCAA tournament in his first season, but never won more than 16 games after that and are a combined 20-37 the last two years.
“We thank Coach Davis for his dedication to the Ole Miss basketball program and our student-athletes,” Ole Miss athletics director Keith Carter said. “No one wanted to bring a title home to Mississippi more than him, and we appreciate the passion for that goal that he shared with our team every day. As he has throughout his career, Coach Davis worked tirelessly to produce a winner, and we wish him, Betty and his family the very best in the future.”
A Mississippi native, Davis came to Ole Miss from Middle Tennessee, where he won 332 games in 16 seasons and reached the NCAA tournament three times. Davis has also coached at Idaho, Texas A&M and on the junior-college level, along with assistant stints at Mississippi State (his alma mater), Utah State and LSU.
Davis’ father, Kermit Sr., was Mississippi State’s head coach for much of the 1970s.
“My family and I are extremely thankful for the opportunity to lead the Ole Miss men’s basketball program the past five years,” Davis said. “We appreciate Chancellor (Glenn) Boyce, Keith Carter, the staff and players for their support and work ethic on behalf of our program, and I wish Ole Miss the best going forward. Oxford is a special place to live and work.”
Assistant coach Win Case has been installed as interim coach for the remainder of the season. The Rebels have three regular-season games remaining, plus at least one game in the SEC tournament.
