Kenyan Drake joining running back-needy NFL team
An NFL team suddenly in a pickle at running back is signing former Alabama standout Kenyan Drake.
Drake and the Colts have reached an agreement on a contract, SportsTrust Advisors, Drake’s agency, announced on Friday afternoon.

Drake will begin preparing for his eighth NFL season in Indianapolis with neither of the Colts’ top two running backs available.
Jonathan Taylor ran for 3,841 yards and 33 touchdowns in his first three seasons with Indianapolis. But entering the final season of his rookie contract, Taylor is on the physically-unable-to-perform list and unhappy about the lack of progress on a contract extension.
Zack Moss was supposed to serve as Taylor’s backup this season, but he broke his arm during practice this week.
Of the available running backs on the Colts’ roster, only two have carried the football during an NFL regular-season game. Deon Jackson had 236 yards and one touchdown on 68 rushing attempts for Indianapolis last season, and Jake Funk has two carries for 5 yards in his NFL career.
Drake has run for 3,866 yards and 33 touchdowns on 867 carries in 101 NFL regular-season games. He also has 216 receptions for 1,624 yards and eight touchdowns.
A third-round draft choice in 2016 after playing for Alabama’s CFP national championship team in 2015, Drake started his NFL career in Miami. The Dolphins traded him to the Arizona Cardinals in the middle of his fourth campaign.
As the Cardinals’ No. 1 running back, Drake exceeded his rushing stats with Miami in less than half the games. In 2020, Drake had 955 yards and 10 touchdowns on 239 rushing attempts in 15 games for Arizona.
But after that season, Drake signed as a free agent with the Las Vegas Raiders to form a tandem with Josh Jacobs, another former Alabama ball-carrier.
Drake ran for 254 yards and two touchdowns on 63 carries and caught 30 passes for 291 yards and one TD in 2021 before he suffered a broken ankle in a 17-15 loss to the Washington Football Team on Dec. 5. He missed Las Vegas’ final five regular-season games and a playoff contest.
Released by the Raiders, Drake joined the Baltimore Ravens in 2022. In 12 games, with five starts, Drake ran for 482 yards and four touchdowns on 109 carries and caught 17 passes for 89 yards and one touchdown last season.
Drake has been an unrestricted free agent since March 15.
The Colts will kick off their three-game preseason schedule on Aug. 12 against the Buffalo Bills.
