Kentucky tops SEC preseason basketball poll

A stacked SEC basketball lineup now has its 2022-23 predicted order of finish.

Alabama was No. 5 in the media voting with Kentucky picked to win the league. Arkansas was No. 2 followed by Tennessee, Auburn and Alabama.

The Crimson Tide also put two players on the All-SEC second team. Freshman Brandon Miller and injured senior point guard Jahvon Quinerly made the second five as Kentucky’s Oscar Tshiebwe was named preseason player of the year. Quinerly tore his ACL in March but Alabama coach Nate Oats said he expects him to return by the time league play opens in January.

Ranked 20th in the preseason AP poll, Alabama had four SEC teams ahead of them led by No. 4 Kentucky.

A year ago, Alabama was No. 2 in the preseason poll before earning the No. 6 seed in the league tournament. An SEC quarterfinal loss to Vanderbilt was followed by a first-round loss to Notre Dame in the NCAA tournament to end a disappointing season with a 19-14 record.

The Crimson Tide opens the season Nov. 7 when Longwood visits Coleman Coliseum for a 7:30 p.m. CT tip.
