A Kentucky mother accused of gunning down her two young children is now facing murder charges.

Authorities responded to the Shepherdsville home of Tiffanie Lucas on Wednesday around 11 a.m., the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. They were called by a neighbor who “felt something was off” and entered the residence to check in. Once inside, the neighbor entered a bedroom and found two boys, ages 9 and 6, with gunshot wounds, according to an arrest report cited by WLKY.

Col. Alex Payne, chief deputy with the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office, said both victims were “covered in blood” by the time officers arrived on the scene.

“We did all we could,” he said. “But they couldn’t be saved.”

Both boys were rushed to Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville, where they died from their wounds.

Their mother was arrested and was being held at the Bullitt County Detention Center. On Thursday, a judge set Lucas’ bond at $2 million.

The gun believed to be used in the double slaying was also recovered.

Police released few other details and an investigation into what prompted the deadly violence is ongoing.

“Whether you think it’s mental illness, just pure evil, a combination of both, it could be substance abuse, any combination thereof,” Payne said.

He added: “Pick your poison. None of it’s good. The result is horrific.”
