Katie Britt staffer robbed at gunpoint in D.C., has car, purse, other items stolen

A staffer to U.S. Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., was robbed at gunpoint Thursday night in Washington, D.C., prompting the senator to call the incident “infuriating” and “completely unacceptable.”

The staffer just parked her car in the 1200 block of E Street NE around 8:20 a.m. Thursday when the suspect approached her, pulled a black handgun to the staffer’s face and said, “give me your purse and keys,” according to a report filed by the staffer with D.C. Metro Police.

The staffer complied and the suspect then took the staffer’s car, purse, laptop and other items before fleeing.

It was not immediately clear if the property has been recovered.

Britt’s office could not immediately be reached for comment, but the senator said in a statement that the staffer is O.K.

The senator also criticized the district’s “out-of-control crime,” including sharp increases in robberies and car thefts.

“We thank God that she is safe and sound after this terrifying incident, and we’re grateful to the Capitol Police Department and Metropolitan Police Department officers who quickly and professionally responded to the scene,” Britt said in a statement sent to D.C. CBS affiliate WUSA9. “It is infuriating and completely unacceptable that an American who is on Capitol Hill to serve her country cannot safely walk the streets of Washington, D.C. at 8:30 at night because of the out-of-control crime in this city. Just look at the police department’s own numbers – this year, robberies are up 68% and motor vehicle thefts are up 102%. Local elected officials in the District of Columbia have the responsibility not just to their citizens, but to the country, to step up and get a hold of the crime crisis ravaging the streets of our nation’s capital.”
