Katie Britt: Democrats ‘melt down’ over trial because ‘people want Donald Trump back in the White House’

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt slammed the media and what she called a “two-tiered system of justice” ahead of the beginning of jury selection in the trial of former President Donald Trump.

Appearing on “Fox & Friends” Monday morning, the Alabama Republican was asked about the Trump trial in New York City, the first ever criminal trial of a former president.

Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records, which prosecutors say were linked to hush money payments before the 2016 election to adult film star Stormy Daniels alleging an affair with Trump.

Trump has pleaded not guilty and denied the affair.

Britt said the trial is a consequence of “the left continuing to melt down over Donald Trump.”

“They are obsessed,” she said. “People are sick of the two-tiered system of justice that we’re seeing. I think that the more the media can talk about this, which we’re going to see them do, then the less they have to talk about the disaster this country is under Joe Biden. They know people want Donald Trump back in the White House and they absolutely cannot stand it.”

Britt argued, like Trump, that the trial – the first of four potential prosecutions for the former president – constitutes “election interference,” as Trump is in the midst of his campaign.

“We need Donald Trump out there, giving that message, and obviously bringing more people in,” she said. “And they know that when that happens, he’s going to win in November and they absolutely can’t stand that. So we’ve got to get him back out there and get this wrapped up and save our country.”

Britt also commented on the Senate’s role in a potential impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. According to Axios, the House plans to deliver impeachment articles to the Senate on Tuesday. The House impeached Mayorkas in February along partisan lines.

Britt said Republicans need to “continue to keep the pressure on” Sen. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to carry out a trial. Senate Democrats have said they plan to quickly dismiss or otherwise dispose of the two articles for “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” and “breach of public trust.”

Britt argued Schumer does not want Democrats in swing states to vote on an impeachment.

“He wants to just completely sweep this under the rug,” Britt said. “It is unprecedented to not have a free, open trial in front of the American people. Whether it is drug cartels, or human traffickers or terrorists, it is absolutely open season under Joe Biden and Secretary Mayorkas, and these failed policies, and somebody needs to answer for it.”
