Katie Britt claimed Trump led the ‘strongest economy in history’: Is that true?
Alabama U.S. Sen. Katie Britt, speaking at the 2024 Republican National Convention, said America had its strongest economy ever under President Donald Trump.
Do the facts back that up?
According to Poynter, the unemployment rate dropped to its lowest level in decades under President Trump before the pandemic temporarily sent the rate much higher.
However, the unemployment rate under President Biden has matched or even fallen lower than it did under Trump, Poynter reported.
The annual growth in America’s gross domestic product, or GDP, the value of all the goods and services the economy produces, was similar during the Trump administration than it was under President Obama, according to Poynter.
GDP growth was stronger during the Clinton administration in the 1990s than it was during Trump’s term in office.
Britt spoke for five minutes on the opening night of the convention in Milwaukee.
The senator and other speakers touted the Trump years as a golden age in America’s economy, contrasted that with what they said was the nation’s decline under Biden, and blamed the current president for inflation.
“Under President Trump, we had the strongest economy in history,” Britt said. “You didn’t need to go into debt just to make ends meet.”
“With President Trump, the tough choice was which job offer to accept. Now, it’s which second job to take just to pay the bills. Your family can’t afford this costly and dangerous decline for four more years. Four more years of Biden-Harris will impose a lifetime of financial damage for our children and our nation,” she added.
A report by the Associated Press showed inflation was much lower under Trump.
The annual rate never exceeded 2.4%, staying close to the Federal Reserve’s target. Under Biden, the rate soared as high as 8% in 2022. It has has since dropped to about 3%.
If the pandemic months are excluded, the nation added 6.7 million jobs, under Trump, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
But the AP reported that 15.4 million jobs have been added during Biden’s presidency.
