Katie Britt assigned to powerful Senate appropriations committee
U.S. Sen. Katie Britt, the freshman Republican from Alabama, will serve on three committees in the 118th Congress, her office announced Wednesday.
Britt will serve on Appropriations, Rules and Administration, and Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs.
She follows in the footsteps of former Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., who served on all three committees, along with the Committee on Environment and Public Works.
Shelby served as the vice chair of the Appropriations Committee. Britt was Shelby’s deputy campaign manager and communications director before eventually becoming his chief of staff.
“I am going to be a voice for restoring fiscal sanity in our country by spending hard-earned taxpayer money responsibly and responsively,” Britt said on her appropriations appointment. “We need to get back to regular order and end the wasteful spending that’s poured fuel on the inflationary fire that is devastating Americans in every corner of our country.”

The Appropriations Committee allocates federal funding to agencies, departments and organizations.
It’s a big assignment for a first-term official.
Of the seven elected freshman U.S. senators (Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-NE, was appointed to former Sen. Ben Sasse’s seat Jan. 23 and to date, has not announced committee appointments), Britt is the only freshman who will serve on Appropriations.
“There is no doubt that Alabama having a seat on the Appropriations Committee is critical for our state, and I’m pleased that we’ll continue to be directly represented in this important process moving forward,” Britt said in a statement.
She added that she will be “ensuring we maintain a strong national defense.”
The Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee handles a breadth of legislation, including bills that pertain to banks, international trade, economic policy and urban development and mass transit.
“I’m eager to be an outspoken advocate for commonsense consumer protections and fostering a financial environment that promotes freedom, opportunity, and prosperity for hardworking families, small businesses, and retirees across our state and nation,” Britt said of the assignment.
The Rules Committee prepares the rules for conducting business in the Senate.
Regarding the Rules Committee assignment Britt said she will champion “the Constitution, the rule of law, and the Senate’s cherished tradition of robust debate and civil discourse.”
Fellow Alabama Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville serves on the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; the Committee on Armed Services; the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions; and the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.
“I believe strongly that we have to look out for Alabama’s interest when it comes to committee assignments and that means we need someone on Armed Services, we need someone on Agriculture and we need someone on Appropriations,” Britt said in her first interview following her inauguration Jan. 3. ”I don’t care which one of those I get to be on now as long as Coach and I split those three up. I think that’s very important for our state.”
