Kareem Jackson’s NFL suspension cut in half on appeal

Suspended by the NFL for four games on Monday, Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson will miss two games instead after having his punishment reduced on appeal, the NFL announced on Tuesday night.

Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Brooks heard the former Alabama defensive back’s appeal on Tuesday. Brooks and former NFL wide receiver James Thrash are the hearing officers jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFL Players Association to decide appeals of on-the-field player discipline.

Brooks reduced Jackson’s suspension to two games without pay. The suspension will cost Jackson $279,444 of his 2023 paycheck.

Jackson will miss the Broncos’ games against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday and, after Denver’s bye week, the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 13. Jackson will return to the Broncos’ active roster on Nov. 14 and be eligible to play against the Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 19 and Cleveland Browns on Nov. 26 – games he was supposed to miss under the original suspension.

The NFL suspended Jackson for four games after his second disqualification of the season on Sunday.

On the third snap of the fourth quarter of the Broncos’ 19-17 victory over Green Bay on Sunday, Jackson brought down Packers tight end Luke Musgrave at the end of an 18-yard reception. The former Alabama standout was penalized for unnecessary roughness and thrown out of the game.

Jon Runyan, the NFL’s vice president of football operations, cited Jackson for violating of Rule 12, Section 2, Article 9 (b)(1) in issuing the four-game suspension on Monday. The rule states: “It is a foul if a player forcibly hits the defenseless player’s head or neck area with the helmet, face mask, forearm or shoulder, even if the initial contact is lower than the player’s neck, and regardless of whether the defensive player also uses his arms to tackle the defenseless player by encircling or grasping him.”

In Denver’s 35-33 loss to Washington on Sept. 17, Jackson was penalized and ejected for a hit on Commanders tight end Logan Thomas on a touchdown reception with 1:47 left in the first half.

Sunday’s disqualification appeared to be the last straw for the NFL, which had fined Jackson for unnecessary roughness four times in the first six weeks of the 2023 season. Twice the fines stemmed from penalties called on the field. The past two fines were not connected to penalties.

The NFL fined Jackson $14,819 in Week 1$19,669 in Week 2$11,473 in Week 3 and $43,709 in Week 6.
