Kareem Jackson gets opportunity to reach NFL milestone

Seven away from becoming the fourth Alabama alumnus to play in 200 NFL regular-season games, cornerback Kareem Jackson could reach that milestone in the 2023 season with the Denver Broncos.

A free agent after the 2022 season, Jackson has agreed to a one-year contract to return to the Broncos. KUSA-TV in Denver and ESPN were among the media outlets reporting Jackson’s return on Monday afternoon.

The 20th player picked in the 2010 NFL Draft, Jackson spent nine seasons as a cornerback for the Houston Texans before starting at strong safety for the past four seasons with the Broncos.

In 2022, Jackson started every game for Denver, played all but five of the Broncos’ 1,144 defensive snaps and recorded a career-high 94 tackles.

Five Alabama alumni have appeared in more NFL regular-season games than the 193 of Jackson: Punter Chris Mohr with 239 games, tight end Howard Cross with 207, linebacker Cornelius Bennett with 206, tight end Ozzie Newsome with 198 and quarterback Bart Starr with 196. Only two have started more NFL regular-season games than Jackson, who has 185 starts – Bennett with 204 and Newsome with 191.

Jackson said in April that he had talked with new Broncos coach Sean Payton and had received a contract offer from Denver. Vance Joseph, the Broncos’ new defensive coordinator, served as the Texans’ secondary coach from 2011 through 2013 while Jackson played for Houston.
