Kalen DeBoer on proposed June signing period: ‘A little too much’

The NCAA is currently considering a proposal to radically change the recruiting calendar. The change would create a signing period in June, allowing recruits to sign their official letters of intent before their senior seasons of high school.

Couple that with moving the December early signing period to before conference championship games, and it’s a major shift. On Thursday, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer was asked about the potential June addition.

DeBoer didn’t sound especially enthused about the change. High school coaches associations around the country have opposed it, saying it could lead to top recruits skipping their senior seasons.

“I know there’s a lot of concerns,” DeBoer said. “I think we’re a pretty unified group here in the SEC with trying to just — we’re for the December date right now, and we’re good with moving it up. I know in the high school ranks, there’s a lot of concern. It’s a very valid concern. You might have some guys that aren’t playing and may opt out if they sign.”

Some college coaches have lodged complaints about the previous recruiting schedule through the years. The December signing period and the transfer portal entry window overlapped, causing stress for staffs already dealing with upcoming postseason play.

On Thursday, DeBoer discussed the thought of high school players opting out.

“I don’t know if those are the guys you want playing,” DeBoer said. “I think it’s also really good for us for any of those we want to see play one more season in the fall for our evaluation purposes. I think it’s really important. Everything, I think, would just get moved up even earlier than what it is. I know there’s some reasons why you’d want to do it. But I think at this point moving it earlier in December is a good move.”

The June signing day proposal was tabled in March by Division I commissioners. The issue will be revisited in June.

The new signing period, if implemented, would take effect in June of 2025.

“Just want to be careful not to speed things up more than what we have,” DeBoer said. “But working and hearing from the high school coaches, I think that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to make the game better, make good decisions on behalf of all of us. I think right now moving it to June is probably a little too much.”
