Kalen DeBoer on Alabama football’s bonding, roster building

Kalen DeBoer isn’t done building his roster just yet. The spring transfer portal window hasn’t opened yet, and Alabama football’s new head coach is prepared to make key additions as needed.

“We do have a couple of spots, and you naturally just kind of keep your eyes and ears open for what those are going to be,” DeBoer said during a Tuesday morning appearance on Greg McElroy and Cole Cubelic’s WJOX radio show. “And we’ve gotta go through our spring ball and continue to evaluate our team. I think there’s some good young players that will step up and do a great job, but we do have a couple extra scholarships. Not a lot but we do have a couple extra scholarships still available that we could utilize when that time comes.”

Alabama’s 2024 squad is already together, taking part in the fourth quarter offseason strength and conditioning program that Nick Saban made famous in Tuscaloosa. It’s a new group under DeBoer, who took over for Saban upon his retirement, and brought players from Washington with him.

But the team is already bonding. The Crimson Tide fell in the College Football Playoff semifinals against Michigan last season, while Washington lost to the Wolverines in the national championship game.

That shared playoff failure has helped bring the group together.

“I think one of the connecting points was kind of going back to just falling short here this last season, whether it be myself and a couple of our staff members that came from Washington, or the team here,” DeBoer said. “We kind of finished the season with an empty pit in our stomach and that’s been something that’s really kind of united.”

DeBoer praised how his players have handled all the change so far.

“Yesterday just being in the indoor and going through our fourth quarter workout, it was electric,” DeBoer said. “It has made this culture what it is and gotten it to this point. They’ve got a little chip on their shoulder, I think. There’s a little bit of noise here and there that they might hear, and we’re going to use that to our advantage just to help us be motivated, go to another level.”

The spring transfer portal window begins April 16. The Crimson Tide’s A-Day spring game is scheduled for April 13 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
