Kadarius Toney appears to dispute Chiefsâ injury report
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney has appeared on the injury report for the NFL team’s past 12 games. He’s missed the past six.
But in an Instagram Live post attributed to the former Blount High School standout, Toney said he isn’t hurt. But Kansas City coach Andy Reid said the wide receiver wouldn’t be on the injury report if he wasn’t.
“Man, that (expletive) cap,” said the audio on the Live post. “I’m not hurt. …
“It go from hip to ankle to this to that. I’m in a full body cast right now at this point.”
Reid was asked about the post, which appeared on Sunday, the same day the Chiefs defeated the Baltimore Ravens 17-10 in the AFC Championship Game to advance to Super Bowl LVIII.
“I actually haven’t seen that,” Reid said. “I’ve heard people talk about it. But he’ll be back out there. We’ll see how he does. …
“Obviously, he’s been on the injury report. That part, that’s not made up by any means. But he’s been working through some things, and he’ll be back out there.”
Toney has been practicing most weeks even though he’s been on every Kansas City injury report for the Chiefs’ past 12 games. For the first six of those weeks, Toney was listed as having an ankle injury for two weeks, ankle and hip injuries for two weeks and a hip injury for two weeks, but he was shown as a full participant in practice for that entire period.
For Weeks 16 and 17 of the regular season, Toney did not practice or play, with a hip injury listed as the cause. Before the regular-season finale, Toney practiced once as a limited participant and did not play in the game, with hip and ankle injuries listed as the cause of his absence.
In Kansas City’s three weeks of playoff preparation, Toney has not missed a practice, but he hasn’t played in a game either. According to the injury report, he’s had one practice as a full participant and the rest as a limited participant. His game status has twice been listed as questionable and once he was shown as out by Friday. The first two weeks, the report assigned hip and ankle injuries to Toney. Before the Baltimore game, he was listed as having a hip injury.
Toney had 27 receptions for 169 yards and one touchdown, 11 rushing attempts for 31 yards and 6 punt returns for 58 yards in 13 regular-season games in 2023.
Toney hasn’t played since Kansas City’s 27-17 victory over the New England Patriots on Dec. 17, when he had two receptions for 5 yards and dropped a pass that ended up being intercepted. That play was reminiscent of Toney’s drop in the season-opener that rookie Brian Branch returned 50 yards for a pick-six in the Detroit Lions’ 21-20 victory.
On Dec. 10, an offside penalty against Toney wiped out what might have been the Play of the Year in the NFL – a 49-yard touchdown with 1:12 remaining on which Toney covered the final 20 yards on a backward pass from tight end Travis Kelce. Kansas City lost the game 20-17 to the Buffalo Bills.

The Chiefs will play the San Francisco 49ers at 5:30 p.m. CST Feb. 11 in Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
A victory would make Kansas City the first team to win back-to-back NFL championships since the New England Patriots finished on top for the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
The Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in last year’s Super Bowl. Toney caught a 5-yard touchdown pass and had the longest punt return in Super Bowl history when got loose for a 65-yard runback to the Philadelphia 5-yard line.
