Juvenile jailed on capital murder charge in fatal Tuscaloosa shooting
An underage suspect has been arrested and charged with capital murder in the shooting death of a 20-year-old man during a robbery early Friday morning in Tuscaloosa, authorities said.
“This case was another example of the different police agencies, along with specialized units and divisions working together to respond, investigate, locate, and arrest a dangerous subject,” said Capt. Jack Kennedy with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office’s Violent Crimes Unit.
Several people drove to the Tuscaloosa Police Department’s West Precinct around 2 a.m. Friday asking for help, telling officers that someone in their vehicle was the victim of a shooting, said Kennedy.
The victim, 20-year-old Derrick Wilder Jr., was shot in the 1700 block of 40th Avenue. He was pronounced dead, Kennedy said.
The VCU investigated the shooting and developed a suspect, who was not immediately able to be located.
The unit, with help from the Tuscaloosa County District Attorney’s Offfice, was able to obtain a capital murder warrant, said Kennedy, adding that the suspect is facing a capital murder charge because authorities say the shooting occurred during a robbery where property was stolen.
The suspect, who was not named publicly because they are under 18 years old, was captured Friday morning, Kennedy said.
They are being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond.
Multiple search warrants were also executed in connection with the case, which led to drugs being seized.
Charges were also brought against another suspect by agents with the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force, Kennedy said.
