Juvenile fatally shot as day of boating ended in Birmingham area

A day of boating ended with a fatal shooting Saturday evening in the Birmingham area, police report.

According to information released by the Birmingham Police Department, officers of the West Precinct were notified by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at about 8:10 p.m. Saturday that a person had been reported shot in the 8600 block of Birmingport Road. That places the incident in far west Birmingham, near Mulga.

“When West Precinct officers arrived on scene, they observed a juvenile male lying unresponsive inside of a vehicle, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound,” the Birmingham PD said in a news release. “Birmingport Fire and Rescue arrived on scene and pronounced that victim deceased. The preliminary investigation reveals multiple individuals who knew each other were participating in recreational boating activities. At the end of those activities, one of the males discharged a firearm, fatally wounding our victim.”

According to the police statement, the circumstances of the shooting were under investigation. As of Saturday evening, “all surviving parties” had been taken to police headquarters for questioning.

Birmingham has had 30 homicides so far in 2025. The city reported 152 homicides overall in 2024.
