Juvenile boy killed in Sylacauga shooting

A shooting in Sylacauga left a juvenile dead.

Few details have been released, but Sylacauga police Chief Kelley Johnson said officers responded Tuesday to the Drew Court public housing complex on a report of shots fired.

When they arrived on the scene, they found the young victim in the roadway. He had suffered gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Johnson said the victim is not being identified because of his age, which also hasn’t been released. The victim was a student in the Coosa County school system.

The chief said there was initially misinformation spread that were was an active shooter near the school property on Main Avenue.

“This was not the case at all,’’ Johnson said.

Police notified school administrators because buses were in the area at the same time the incident occurred.

“At no time was there a threat to any Sylacauga School System student, spectators, or school personnel,’’ he said. “School officials suspended the after-school activities for precautionary reasons.’’

No arrests have been announced.
