Justin Thomas’ hole-in-one comes a day too soon

Justin Thomas’ hole-in-one at the 16th hole on Wednesday at Riviera Country Club came a day too soon.

Had the former Alabama All-American’s ace come on Thursday in the first round of the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational, Thomas and his caddie would have won cars.

But Thomas’ hole-in-one at the par-3 16th happened during the pro-am for the tournament. Thomas and caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay didn’t go away empty-handed, though.

Claudia Marquez, the chief operating officer for Genesis Motors North America, announced the company would make $50,000 charitable donations on behalf of Thomas and Mackay, with the money going to the Justin Thomas Foundation and the Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children.

Thomas is scheduled to tee off in the first round of the Genesis Invitational at 11:25 a.m. CST Thursday with playing partners Tiger Woods and Gary Woodland.

Every day during the tournament, the first player with a hole-in-one on the 16th will win a Genesis GV70 and his caddie will get a Genesis GV60.

Thomas said he didn’t know how many holes-in-one he had.

“It’s 25-ish,” Thomas said. “It’s bad I don’t know that, but I should.”
