Justin Thomas critiques golf reporter over parts of new LIV vs PGA Tour book

In the days after a Ryder Cup that had far more drama off the course than on it, multiple top PGA Tour golfers have criticized excerpts that were put on social media from a new book by golf writer Alan Shipnuk titled “LIV and Let Die: The Inside Story of the War between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.”

One excerpt that garnered significant attention was a quote from an unnamed Ryder Cup teammate of Rory McIlroy speaking about the golfer who essentially became the face of the PGA’s fight back against the Saudi Arabian-backed LIV tour.

“F*ck Rory,” the quote read. “I’m so sick of hearing how he’s some kind of hero who is saving golf.”

Two-time major champion and former Alabama Crimson Tide golfer Justin Thomas responded to the quote on X, formerly known as twitter. He stated he and other PGA players are “sick” of Shipunk’s reporting. He said Shipnuk should be bringing positive reporting to golf, not using anonymous sources who critique other players.

Other golfers like five-time major champion Brooks Koepka, who went to the LIV tour and was the only LIV player on the 2023 American Ryder Cup team, chimed in with support of Thomas.

When some users replied to Thomas’ tweet saying that it isn’t Shipnuk’s job to only report positively, Thomas said he understood but was still frustrated about unnamed sources.

Shipnuck later tweeted as well, explaining his role as a reporter trying to report the facts. That doesn’t mean covering or hiding information because it might be negative. His book is scheduled to come out in mid-October.

These tweets come after a week where golf media had been criticized by golfers at the Ryder Cup for reports regarding Patrick Cantlay, another American golfer, and his decision to not wear a hat during the second day of the tournament.

A story stated there was a divide in the American team — which was dominated by the Europeans over the first two days and ultimately lost 16.5-11.5 — and Cantlay was a major piece in that because he reportedly believed the players should be paid for their participation in the Ryder Cup.

After the afternoon session on the second day, McIlroy and Cantlay’s caddie Joe LaCava had a tense moment on the 18th green after Cantlay made a dramatic putt.

In another reply to his tweet Thursday, Thomas said he was still in Italy on vacation after the tournament. He was regarded as a controversial selection to the Ryder Cup team as a Captain’s Pick because he had among his worst seasons as a professional in 2023, including missing the cut in three of the four major tournaments this year.

As a whole, Thomas played better than most of the other Americans at the Ryder Cup, but his partner and friend Jordan Spieth struggled mightily. Individually, Thomas went 1-2-1 at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome.
