Just how historic was South Alabamaâs 33-7 win at OK State?
Sun Belt Conference teams have made a habit of beating Power 5 opponents in recent years, but rarely has such a victory been so decisive as South Alabama’s 33-7 win at Oklahoma State on Saturday.
The Jaguars’ 26-point win over the Cowboys in Stillwater is tied for the largest on the road in program history. South Alabama also won by 26 (47-21) at Appalachian State in 2013.

South Alabama recorded its second-ever victory over a Power 5 program, having also won 21-20 at Mississippi State in 2016. But the win over the Bulldogs came only after MSU blew a 20-0 lead and missed a potential winning field goal on the final play of the game.
The domination was thorough at Oklahoma State. South Alabama led 10-0 after one quarter and 23-0 at halftime and after three quarters, outgaining the Cowboys 395 yards to 208 and holding the ball for more than 35 minutes of clock time.
Among current Sun Belt Conference members, only Coastal Carolina and Southern Miss have ever scored more-decisive victories over Power 5/major independent teams. And both of those teams’ wins have asterisks to them.
Coastal beat Kansas 49-22 in 2021, one point better than South Alabama’s win at Oklahoma State. But that victory came on the Chanticleers’ home field in Conway, S.C., not before 55,000 hostile fans on the road.
Southern Miss has nine victories over Power 5 programs/major independent in its illustrious football history, including 58-14 at Florida State in 1981, 38-8 vs. Ole Miss in 1979, 21-0 at Alabama in 2000 and 37-17 vs. North Carolina State in 2005. But all those wins came well before the Golden Eagles joined the Sun Belt in 2022.
South Alabama, Coastal Carolina and Southern Miss are the only current Sun Belt programs to beat a Power 5/major independent team by more than three touchdowns.
