‘Just a very tragic accident’ says mom of 2-year-old Alabama dog attack victim

The mother of a two-year-old boy killed in a dog attack last Friday in Madison County said in a public statement that the incident appears to be “just a very tragic accident with no one to be held at fault.”

Kayla Hughley Partain identified her son Mark Alan as the child killed in a dog attack Friday afternoon.

Huntsville Emergency Medical Services Inc., responded to T.R. Christian Road in New Hope around 5:21 p.m. Friday on a call of a child being bitten by a dog, said HEMSI spokesman Don Webster.

The boy sustained fatal bite wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, said Madison County Coroner Tyler Berryhill. The New Hope police and fire departments, Owens Cross Roads Police, and Madison County Sheriff’s Office took part in the incident.

It was the second fatal dog attack last week in North Alabama. The child died four days after Beau Clark, 4, was killed in an attack in Hartselle.

Ricky Clark, the owner of the dogs involved, told WAAY that animal control took his dogs – a Husky and German Shepherd mix – and said they would return them in 10 days.

“I couldn’t believe it because my dogs ain’t never growled or barked at nobody or nothing,” Clark said. “If I even had a clue that those dogs were going to hurt anybody, I wouldn’t have had them.”

In a Facebook post, Partain said her family’s “world was completely shattered.”

“The hurt is unreal. I don’t even feel like I’m living in reality. My children’s hearts are so broken. I’d like to thank everyone that has messaged, prayed, or sent kind words,” she said.

Partain said there will be a full investigation.

“Please keep us in your thoughts as I know this will never get easier,” she wrote.
