Jury takes 30 minutes to convict man in deadly shooting outside Birmingham motel
A 37-year-old has been convicted of murder in the 2021 shooting death of another man outside a Birmingham motel.
A Jefferson County jury took 30 minutes to find Christopher Garcia Spencer guilty in the slaying of 39-year-old Hernado Retion McJunkins nearly two years ago.
The deadly shooting happened on Aug. 17, 2021, outside the King’s Inn on Third Avenue North.
Authorities said a witness ran into the motel just after 2:30 a.m. that morning and told the clerk multiple shots had been fired and someone had been hit.
When Birmingham police and fire medics arrived, they found McJunkins unresponsive on the sidewalk. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
The day after McJunkins was killed, police arrested and charged 29-year-old Ira Dexter Eaton Jr.
Spencer was arrested two weeks later in Philadelphia, Mississippi.
Spencer’s trial began Monday before Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Kandice Pickett.
Deputy District Attorneys Jason Wilson and Tyerra Henderson are prosecuting the case. Spencer is represented by attorney Bobby Davis.
No witnesses were called on behalf of the defense.
The case went to the jury Thursday, which returned its swift verdict.
Spencer’s sentencing is set for June 12.
