Josh Bynes still representing Auburn in 12th NFL season
Marlon Humphrey isn’t just a cornerback for the Baltimore Ravens. He’s also the host of the interview show “Studio 44 with Marlon Humphrey” for the NFL team’s website.
A recent episode featured Josh Bynes, Baltimore’s middle linebacker.

Because Humphrey is an Alabama alumnus and Bynes is an Auburn alumnus, the “Studio 44″ host began his interview by noting the divide between the Iron Bowl rivals, then asked the linebacker: “Why did you choose the worser side?”
“I chose the best side,” Bynes said. “I got my ring to prove that. I chose Auburn because that was the place that I went that was home for me. The family atmosphere — unlike the other school, I’ve heard. But it was a great place for family, friends and everybody. I met my wife there. That was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life.”
A Hoover High School star, Humphrey said he had gone to Auburn on a recruiting visit.
“And you loved it,” Bynes interjected.
“No, I didn’t,” Humphrey said. “But I will say I did feel the family thing.”
Bynes capped his college career as the leading tackler for Auburn’s undefeated BCS national championship team in the 2010 season. Tigers quarterback Cam Newton won the Heisman Trophy that season.
“We had the talent,” Bynes said, “and when Cam came, we was like, ‘We’re winning the national championship.’ We don’t care what it takes, but we knew we were going to win the national championship that year. …
“That team was special because everybody was united. Cam had a bunch of things going on that year and all these other things were going on, of course. Bama had the Scam Newton signs up and all that crazy nonsense. But we just united, backed him up 100 percent. We went through a lot of adversity. That year was just rough. We got through some games where it was three-point games, last-second games, a couple of turnovers in the last few minutes and even the Iron Bowl that year. What was it? And then Cam just did his thing and boom, boom, boom, we ended up winning — in Tuscaloosa, by the way — and, obviously, we know what happened the rest of the way that year.”
After Auburn defeated Oregon 22-19 in the BCS title game, Bynes was passed over in the 2011 NFL Draft. He caught on with the Ravens as a rookie free agent and played on a Super Bowl-winning team the next year.
Bynes has started every game at middle linebacker for Baltimore this season as he became the 19th former Auburn player to appear in 12 NFL seasons. To get there, Bynes persevered through being released six times.
“I’m resilient as all get-out,” Bynes said. “I’ve always been denied. When I came in, they told me what I couldn’t do, what I can’t do, what I’m not able to do. You’re not fast enough, you’re not this enough. And for me, every year I’m proving that I can do this. I’m fast enough, I’m smart enough, I’m able to make plays. I’m still able to do this on a consistent level.
“And also for me, it’s just the guys. I love this. I love football. I love the week-to-week grind. I can’t stand training camp. I can’t stand that part of it. I get it. That’s the process of the game. But I could just forget that and go to the season grinding week in and week out, studying for teams over and over, I love that part. I live for that part. I love to pass down every single thing like knowledge or things I find with teams week to week and give that to guys and then go out there and execute on Sunday. It’s just an exhilarating feeling.”
Bynes played with Baltimore in 2011 through 2013, the Detroit Lions in 2014 through 2016, the Arizona Cardinals in 2017 and 2018, Baltimore in 2019, the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020 and Baltimore in 2021 and 2022.
“I never ever wanted to leave this place, but you know how the business goes,” Bynes said. “It’s part of it. But this place has just been home for me, my family, my kids. Even my 2-year-old, every time he sees a Raven, he just says, ‘Daddy.’ …
“Being here, it’s totally different from any other team. I believe in this Purple and Black all day. This is my home. This is my family. And I don’t want to be anywhere else. This is the best organization in the world.”
Bynes and Humphrey will be back in action at 7:20 p.m. CDT Sunday, when the Bengals visit M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore for an AFC North game.
