Jordan Walker’s 41 points lift UAB to 93-91 2OT win at Charlotte
Jordan “Jelly” Walker has endured an up-and-down season in his final collegiate campaign.
He was held to a season-low five points at FIU in early January, suffered a foot injury the next game against Western Kentucky and missed five straight contests before returning to help the UAB basketball team to an 8-1 record down the stretch.
Walker saved his best effort of the year for the season finale and was in all-tournament mode in helping power the Blazers to a 93-91 double-overtime victory over Charlotte, Saturday, March 4, at Dale F. Halton Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina.
UAB entered the game at 57 in the NCAA NET and concludes the regular season at 23-8 overall and 14-6 in C-USA — winning six straight and 10 of its last 11 games — after earning a Quad-2 victory and sweeping the two-game series over the 49ers.
“What a game, both teams really played and neither team could string together many stops,” UAB head coach Andy Kennedy told David Crane on Blazer Sportsline postgame. “If you’re a casual basketball fan, I’m sure you were pretty entertained.”

The Blazers finished shooting 47.5 percent from the field and 31 percent (9-of-29) on 3-pointers, owned a plus-22 advantage on inside scoring and were 8-for-10 at the charity stripe. Defensively, UAB allowed the 49ers to shoot 45.1 percent overall and 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from beyond the arc, but won the rebounding battle with a plus-4 edge on the glass.
“I didn’t like our intensity, defensively,” Kennedy said. “We talked about before the game, they’re a rhythmic offensive team and a matchup problem because they’ve got two centers who can both stretch you to 3. They get you really extended and gash you at the basket.”
“They big-boy’d us a little bit in the first half,” he added. “We’re plus-22 points in the paint and we needed every one of them. We made a concerted effort to go inside-out, with the exception of Jelly, obviously.”
Walker, who entered the game as the nation’s fourth-leading scorer (22.4 ppg), finished a single point shy of his UAB scoring record, producing a season-high 41 points on 15-of-32 shooting overall while going 8-for-20 on 3-point attempts. He also had four rebounds and six assists, two turnovers, and scored the first five points for the Blazers in the second overtime session.
The senior and reigning C-USA Player of the Year had 11 points in the first half, eight points in overtime and made his largest contribution during the second half with a pair of 3-pointers, offsetting a pair from the 49ers, and seven straight points during a personal run to give UAB a 59-56 lead at the 7:50 mark of the frame.
Walker also capped another 7-0 run with a little more than five minutes left in regulation, allowing the Blazers to hold a 69-63 lead before Charlotte closed out on a 12-6 run to send the contest to overtime.
“Made some big plays and we’ve seen that before,” Kennedy said. “He’s playing good basketball, as is our team, and today was a heck of a test.”
Tavin Lovan had eight points and four rebounds and kicked off the game with a quick layup to open the scoring. He scored his final six points in overtime and twice scored the go-ahead basket in the final overtime session.
Tied at 89-all, Walker drove inside the lane and dished to Lovan along the baseline, who then scored on a dunk to put the Blazers up before Charlotte’s Lu’cye Patterson made a pair of free throws to knot up the score at exactly one minute remaining. On UAB’s final possession, Lovan rebounded a 3-point miss from KJ Buffen and scored the game-winning basket on a layup with 23 seconds left in the game.
“Tavin had two huge baskets,” Kennedy said. “One on an alley-oop, which was not an easy catch, and then at the end — ball kept alive, lot of traffic, and had the composure to finish.”
Buffen finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, followed by Jemison with 12 points, eight boards, four blocks and two steals. Jemison scored all of his points in the second half and blocked Patterson on an easy layup attempt with 12 seconds left in the second overtime.
For Charlotte, Brice Williams finished with a career-high 32 points, along with six rebounds, two assists and three blocks, and Patterson had 19 points, seven boards and four steals.
“We had zero answers for him (Williams),” Kennedy said.
Eric Gaines finished with seven points and four rebounds, along with a block and a steal, followed by Javian Davis with seven points and three boards. Ledarius Brewer had five points and four rebounds and Ty Brewer contributed five boards and two blocks.
The Blazers enter the C-USA tournament as the No. 3 seed and will face the winner of No. 6 Rice and No. 11 UTSA on Thursday at The Star in Frisco, Texas. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. CT.
