Jordan Rodgers on Alabama QBs: ‘It’s a 2-man race between Ty Simpson and Tyler Buchner’

Quarterback will no doubt be one of the topics of conversation when Alabama’s Nick Saban takes the podium during the SEC Media Days in Nashville.

That will be Wednesday.

On Monday, however, Jordan Rodgers of the SEC Network said the Crimson Tide quarterback competition comes down to two guys.

“I think it’s a 2-man race between Ty Simpson and Tyler Buchner,” Rodgers told “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning” on WJOX-94.5 in Birmingham. “I think you don’t bring in Buchner unless you believe this is the style of offense we need to run because of the talent we have around the quarterback, and I think they have a ton of talent. … They have a ton of weapons. I think they need a guy who can just play point guard and distribute. (Former Alabama quarterback) Bryce (Young) was good at that, but he was also a superstar and could make the ‘wow’ throws.”

Jalen Milroe and Simpson began the offseason in a battle for the spot, but Alabama added Tyler Buchner, a former Notre Dame quarterback.

“Ty is developing. He’s got a really high ceiling,” Rodgers said. “When you dive into the film of Buchner from Notre Dame, I was actually pleasantly surprised with some of the off-platform short game. … He’s not Bryce, but I was surprised by his flexibility and his arm talent in that right.”
