Jon Stewart joins Roy Wood Jr. to talk Trump, ‘Star Wars’ arraignment on ‘The Daily Show’
Jon Stewart popped in during Roy Wood Jr.’s stint as guest host of “The Daily Show” to tell the Alabama-raised comic he was doing “a fabulous job,” engage in some “Star Wars” roleplay and nearly comment on Donald Trump’s arraignment during Tuesday’s episode.
During the “Headlines” monologue segment, Wood called Tuesday, when former President Donald Trump was arraigned in Manhattan, “the craziest day in New York since the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man came to town.”
“Look at how sad Trump looks,” Wood said about a photo of Trump in the courtroom. “My man look like somebody told him his dog died or that Mike Pence is still alive.”

Wood also joked about Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-Ga.), who led a protest of Trump’s arrest, saying she “double-parked her broomstick” outside the courthouse and made some unusual comparisons. “President Trump is joining some of the most incredible people in history being arrested today,” she told one outlet. “Nelson Mandela was arrested, served time in prison. Jesus. Jesus was arrested.” Wood joked, “How are you going to compare Donald Trump to Jesus? First of all, Jesus walked on water. Donald Trump can barely walk on land.”
Wood then mocked cable news channels for providing “wall-to-wall coverage even when there was absolutely nothing to talk about,” before they played a series of Fox News and CNN clips breaking down Trump’s motorcade route and how many doors the courthouse had.
After a series of jokes on the arraignment, the audience applauded Wood’s performance, but he wasn’t satisfied. “Thank you for clapping for that, man. You know, that was good, but I don’t know if that’s good enough to go viral,” Wood told the audience. “I’m trying to go viral this week. It’s a lot of pressure as guest host. You’ve got to be funny, you’ve got to be satirical, you’ve got to be powerful. You’ve got to go viral. I don’t know what to do. I wish I had somebody that I could talk to, to guide me through some of this stuff, man.”
Out walked Jon Stewart, former “Daily Show” host and now star of “The Problem with Jon Stewart” on Apple TV+, to thunderous applause. Donning a “Star Wars” Jedi robe, Stewart implored Wood to “use the Force.” He sat at the desk with Wood and noted, “I used to work here when the budget wasn’t as big.”
As Stewart began to make a grand point about Trump’s arraignment, Wood interjected to ask why he dressed like Obi Wan Kenobi, and the conversation devolved into a series of “Star Wars” analogies wherein Wood insisted he play the role of Han Solo and not Kenobi’s apprentice Luke Skywalker. “I should have come when [Sarah] Silverman was here!” Stewart said, referencing her stint as guest host.
Stewart attempted to make his point — while telling Wood “Thank you for having me on the program…You’re doing a fabulous job by the way” — but the guest host interrupted to say they were out of time.

Wood is a comedian, writer, actor and producer who grew up in Birmingham, where he emerged as a jokester making prank phone calls on radio station 95.7 JAMZ.
After Trevor Noah’s exit, the satirical Emmy-winning show has employed guest hosts to fill in until Comedy Central finds a permanent replacement, including the likes of Leslie Jones, Sarah Silverman, John Leguizamo, Al Franken and the show’s correspondents. Wood marked the first of the show’s reporters to sit behind the desk.
Wood will guest host the show this week. His colleagues Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta, Desi Lydic, Dulcé Sloan, Lewis Black and Jordan Klepper also will guest host the program between now and the week of May 8, according to Variety.
Hosting responsibilities gave Wood a break from reporting in the field, but he will handle monologue duties, interviews and all else we’ve seen from past hosts like Jon Stewart, Trevor Noah and the slew of guest hosts in recent weeks.
“The Daily Show” airs weeknights at 10 p.m. CT on Comedy Central. You can also stream new episodes of the show on Comedy Central’s website or Paramount+.
