Johnny Manziel doc reveals his prediction in 2012 win over Alabama: âF-word Nick Sabanâ
What made Johnny Manziel “Johnny Football” was not only his athleticism and his magician-like antics on the football field, it was also the swagger in which he did it with.
All of it is captured well in Netflix’s new documentary, “Untold: Johnny Football.”
To be more specific, though, the only thing that captures the “Johnny Football” persona more efficiently is a handful of plays – and an off-the-cuff remark – on Nov. 10, 2012.
That was the day the No. 15 Aggies traveled to Tuscaloosa to play the No. 1-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.
“We have zero expectations to win this game,” Manziel revealed on the documentary. “And when you have that ‘What the (f-word),’ does-it-really-matter attitude, you play better.”
Quick refresher on the game for those who don’t – or refuse – to remember it. The Aggies jumped out to a 20-0, first-quarter lead.
Nick Saban’s Tide then scored 17 straight thanks to rushing touchdowns by TJ Yeldon and Eddie Lacey and a Jeremy Shelley 28-yard field goal in a game the Crimson Tide appeared to regain control of.
A 29-yard field goal gave Texas A&M a 23-17 lead. The Aggies had the ball with 10 minutes left in the game.
“Johnny walks over where I am with some media people, and he said, ‘F-word Nick Saban. F-word Alabama. That’s it. We’re scoring a touchdown right here. Watch,” Billy Liucci of TexAgs revealed in the documentary.
According to Manziel, “the next play was a fake wheel route and I probably throw the best pass I’ve ever thrown in my life.” Manziel found Ryan Swope for 42 yards to the Alabama 24. On the next play, Manziel hits Malcome Kennedy against man coverage on a corner route for a 24-yard touchdown.
“He comes running off the sideline and he’s saying, ‘I f-in told you,’” Liucci recalls. “And the national media guy looks at me and goes, ‘Dude’s a witch.’”
The Tide got a 54-yard touchdown from AJ McCarron to Amari Cooper, but, in the end, it wasn’t enough as Texas A&M won 29-24 and the “Johnny Football” craze found another gear.
“At the very end,” Manziel said, “50 seconds left, you go and take a knee in Tuscaloosa and you win the game. You walk off the field like a f-in G. …
“The feeling walking into that locker room after was such a joy, a rush for you and your boys. To do the undoable to beat the unbeatable and to really change the course of history forever.”
Kliff Kingsbury, the A&M offensive coordinator at the time, apparently knew something many didn’t know leading up to the game. He shared a story in the documentary in which someone wished him good luck. His reply? “We don’t need it. We got Johnny.”
Manziel had set the stage before he even took the field that day, though. He watch ‘300,’ the 2006 movie starring Gerard Butler, and tweeted: “Give to them nothing but take from them EVERYTHING.”
“And that felt like the perfect spot that we could be in.”
“Untold: Johnny Football” is available to stream on Netflix.
