Johnny Manziel calls out Texas A&M for final play call against Alabama: ‘That’s a joke of an ending’
Johnny Manziel didn’t like the play call.
With three seconds left and Texas A&M 2 yards from defeating Alabama for the second straight year, the Aggies’ final pass fell incomplete. The No. 1 Crimson Tide survived 24-20.
“One of the worst calls I’ve ever seen in my life,” Manziel said. “You have one play to beat the #1 team in the country and that’s what we run?”
Alabama was called for pass interference on what appeared to be an interception the play before. The penalty gave the Aggies new life and one final shot at the upset.
Haynes King’s throw to front of the end zone had no chance.
“Every single practice you have a goal-line period and practice these type of situations,” Manziel tweeted. “That’s a joke of an ending for the Aggies.”
In 2012, Manziel was launched into the national scene after he led Texas A&M to a 29–24 victory over No. 1 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. In that game, Manziel accounted for 345 of A&M’s 418 yards of offense, including two passing touchdowns.
Jalen Milroe threw for three touchdowns in his first start and No. 1 Alabama made a final goal-line stand to escape with a 24-20 victory over Texas A&M on Saturday night in a battle of backup quarterbacks.
Playing without injured Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young, the Crimson Tide (6-0, 3-0 SEC) needed two late stops from Will Anderson Jr. and the defense. They got them, just barely, to survive four turnovers and two missed field goals.
King, subbing for injured starter Max Johnson, drove the Aggies (3-2, 1-2) 69 yards in the final 1:50 with big passes to Evan Stewart and Moose Muhammad III. Jordan Battle appeared to end the threat with an interception in the end zone, but Brian Branch was flagged for pass interference.
That set up one final shot from the 2 with three seconds left, but King’s pass to Stewart fell incomplete.
