John Carroll takes advantage of Carver miscues in 43-26 win
John Carroll took advantage of three Carver turnovers and won an offensive showdown 43-26.
The win kept the Class 5A Cavaliers undefeated at 5-0, marking the first time since 1999 that John Carroll (5-0, 3-0) has opened the season unbeaten. The 1999 squad won six straight games, but failed to make the playoffs.
The Cavaliers got the first break of the game when a snap sailed over the head of the Carver punter into the end where Zachary Archer got the loose ball for a touchdown.
Carver (2-2, 1-2) fell behind 12-0 and couldn’t overcome the deficit.
John Carroll quarterback Carson McFadden had 129 yards rushing, including scoring runs of 1 and 10 yards. Running back Koron Wright added two rushing touchdowns of 13 and 8 yards.
The victory came on the day that John Carroll celebrated its only state championship team from 1973.
Game ball: Carver sophomore quarterback DeJarvis Wade threw for 389 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Wade had touchdown passes of 15 and 83 yards. He also caught a 14-yard scoring pass. Wade finished 25 of 45 for 389 yards with one interception.
Coachspeak: “It feels great to unbeaten. But we still have a lot to improve on. We are going to take our off week and re-group for the second half of the season.” — John Carroll coach Will Mara said.
They Said It: “I had rather given up 2 points instead of seven to start the game. We just could not overcome those early mistakes. “We knew it was going to be an offensive shoot-out. We need to quit giving our opponents points.” — Carver coach Rod Carson.
