Joey Jones heads up USA’s 2023 Hall of Fame class
Former South Alabama football coach Joey Jones headlines the school’s 2023 Athletic Hall of Fame class, which was announced Wednesday.
Jones, who coached the Jaguars from 2009-17, is joined in the four-person Class of 2023 by Chardé Hannah (women’s soccer, 2014-17), Kevin Hill (baseball, 2014-16) and Daniel Leitner (men’s tennis, 2012-15). The group will be inducted on Oct. 28, and will be honored at halftime of South Alabama’s home football game vs. Louisiana later that day.
Jones started the South Alabama program from scratch in 2008, and had the Jaguars on the field the following year. USA won its first 17 games under Jones, joined the Sun Belt Conference in 2012 and reached a bowl game for the first time in 2014.
Jones was Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year in 2013, and posted an overall record of 52-50 with two bowl berths. A Mobile native who starred at wide receiver for Alabama in the early 1980s, he is now director of player personnel at Mississippi State.
Hannah was a two-time All-Sun Belt Conference pick and was named Most Valuable Player of both the 2014 and 2015 Sun Belt tournaments. South Alabama won the Sun Belt Conference tournament championship in all four seasons in which she played.
A Tupelo, Miss., native, Hannah was named Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year and league tournament MVP in 2014. Most memorably, she scored the decisive goal in South Alabama’s 1-0 victory over top-ranked Florida State in 2016.
Hill was a first-team All-American for the Jaguars in 2016, and was twice named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year. The Oklahoma City native won the Sun Belt pitching Triple Crown as a junior in 2015 with a 10-0 record, 1.73 ERA and 107 strikeouts.
Hill went 8-2 with a 2.86 ERA as a senior in 2016, striking out 126. Despite his playing only three seasons with the Jaguars after transferring from junior college, Hill’s 326 strikeouts and 298.2 innings are sixth in program history, while his 22 wins are ninth.
Leitner was Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year in both 2014 and 2015 and was named to the all-conference team three straight times. He was Sun Belt Player of the Week eight times, including five times his senior year.
A native of Germany, Leitner also made the All-Sun Belt team as a doubles player his senior year. He went 28-6 in singles in 2015, earning a spot in the NCAA championship tournament.
South Alabama’s 2023 Athletic Hall of Fame Class will be inducted during a ceremony at the Moulton Bell Tower and Alumni Plaza at 10 a.m. on Oct. 28. The Hall of Fame now includes 107 former student-athletes, coaches and administrators since it was formed in 1989.
