Jefferson County mom denied bond in abuse, starvation death of 4-year-old son

A Jefferson County mother and her boyfriend will remain jailed without bond in the abuse death of the woman’s 4-year-old son.

Kayla Maria Nash, 20, and Jakobi Daesha Collins-Rogers are charged in the August death of Zane Xavier Nash.

Nash is charged with felony murder and one count of aggravated child abuse and Collins-Rogers is charged with felony murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse.

The couple was arrested in late November.

Both appeared Tuesday before Jefferson County District Judge William Bell.

Attorneys for Nash sought bond for the mother, noting her young age, ties to the community and lack of any prior felonies.

Following an Aniah’s Law hearing, Bell denied bond for Nash.

Both Nash and Collins-Rogers waived their right to a preliminary hearing. Bell forwarded the case to a grand jury.

Zane died at 4:15 a.m. Aug. 2 at Children’s of Alabama.

Authorities previously said the child received blunt force trauma injuries.

Court records also allege that Collins-Rogers broke Zane’s arm, and that both mother and her boyfriend starved the child.
