Jefferson County Jail inmate dies at hospital after suffering medical complications
A Jefferson County Jail inmate died at the hospital Wednesday, two days after authorities said he experienced medical complications at the lockup in Bessemer.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the inmate as Joseph Ryan Byram. He was 39 and lived in Adger.
Byram was booked in the Bessemer Division jail on Dec. 21, 2022, on second-degree assault and drug charges.
Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said that on Monday, Byram was found to be experiencing apparent medical complications. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:46 a.m.
Yates said the cause of death is pending additional lab studies, but said an autopsy showed no evidence of trauma or foul play.
