Jefferson County Democratic primary runoff results: Incumbent district judge loses reelection
Jefferson County District Court Judge Pamela Wilson Cousins appears to be the only county Democrat to lose their primary in 2024 after Tuesday’s runoff election.
Jacquelyn Grant-Jones was ahead of Wilson Cousins, 57 percent to 43 percent, with 99 percent of precincts reporting in the District Court Judge Place 3 race, according to unofficial results posted by the county. Place 3 is one of three family court judges in the county.
As of 10:19 p.m., Grant-Jones had 4,198 votes to 3,177 votes for Wilson Cousins.
No Republicans are running in November.
Wilson Cousins, who was first elected in 2018, is the lone incumbent Democrat in Jefferson County to lose their primary this year.
In other races, Yashiba “Red” Blanchard defeated Yawanna Nabors McDonald, 62 percent to 38 percent, in the Democratic primary for Jefferson County Probate Judge Place 1.
Blanchard had 7,173 votes to McDonald’s 4,459 votes.
Blanchard will face off against Republican John Amari, who did not have a primary opponent.
Either Blanchard or Amari will succeed James “Jim” Naftel, who was appointed to the position by Gov. Kay Ivey in 2020 following the retirement of longtime Jefferson County Probate Judge Alan King.
Naftel is not running.
