Jefferson County dedicates millions to improving road safety and traffic flow through 2024
Drivers throughout Jefferson County will be navigating multiple temporary road closures on their commutes through 2024 as the county works on roughly $100 million in road projects.
These projects aim to improve road safety throughout the county and resolve traffic issues in the rapidly growing McCalla area where the new UAB Medical West Hospital and Smucker’s plant are being built according to previous comments from Jefferson County Manager Cal Markert.
Below is a list of road projects, arranged by their start date, that are on the horizon or wrapping up soon in Jefferson County, according to Jefferson County officials:
Grants Mill Road widening project in conjunction with Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT)
“The contractor is working on the road widening portion and completion of the soil nail wall [a construction method used to stabilize unstable soil],” the county Facebook page posted in May. “The original detour dates were based on rock bolting large portions of the wall, but the uncovered rock structure continues to require more soil nails and grout to fill the voids.
