Jefferson County Commissioner named Birmingham Business Alliance CEO, will resign commission
Jefferson County Commissioner Steve Ammons will resign from that position to become CEO of the Birmingham Business Alliance.
The BBA board confirmed the selection at a meeting Friday morning, according to its release. Ammons is a BBA board member but did not attend Friday’s meeting.
“When we began the process of identifying a new CEO, the goal was to identify a successful candidate who understands the unique fabric of Birmingham community and who would also bring immediate credibility and confidence to the role, ” said BBA Board chair Greg Curran of Maynard Nexsen and BB. “Steve Ammons has shown great leadership to the BBA over the years, and we are all energized by his thoughtful vision for the organization’s future.”
Ammons, a Vestavia Hills resident and U.S Navy veteran, Ammons was initially elected to represent District 5 on the commission in 2018. He was re-elected in 2022, running essentially unopposed. Previously, Ammons served two terms on the Vestavia Hills City Coucil.
“I am excited to expand my service to the seven-county Greater Birmingham Region with the BBA,” said Ammons. “Birmingham has more opportunities in front of us than ever before. I look forward to working closely with the team, our investors and our partners in the community to advance economic growth and regional cooperation together.”
The Election Commission will set a date for a special election to replace Ammons within seven days of his resignation, “which should be around the end of the month,” said Commission chair Jimmie Stephens.
In the interim, the commission will operate with four members, Stephens added.
Ammons will begin at BBA on May 30.
