Jeffco deputy’s mother carjacked in Birmingham; suspect nabbed after chase, crash in Calera

A man is in custody after an early-morning carjacking in Birmingham ended in chase and crash in Calera.

The strong-arm carjacking happened about 6 a.m. Wednesday near a dog daycare business in the 2700 block of Seventh Avenue South.

The victim is the mother of a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy, sheriff’s officials confirmed. Her dog was still in the vehicle when it was stolen.

A lookout bulletin was released, and Calera police officers spotted the vehicle.

A chase ensued and ended when the suspect crashed on County Road 25 near Lhoist. Calera police Chief David Hyche said there were no serious injuries.

The victim’s dog was recovered unharmed.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken into custody.

“The suspect made a series of bad decisions this morning,’’ Hyche said. “He committed a violent crime against someone’s mother and took her car by force.”

“He fled law enforcement when he and the vehicle were located,’’ he said. “He drove in a reckless manner endangering Calera officers, innocent citizens, and himself. He came to Calera.”
