JD Crowe: Matt Gaetz AG nomination ‘blows the mind’ of Alabama congressman

This is an opinion cartoon

President-elect Donald Trump’s pick of Matt Gaetz for attorney general has sent shockwaves throughout Washington. Liberals and conservatives alike are flipping their wigs.

I can’t help but wonder what was going through the mind of Alabama Rep. Mike Rogers when he heard the news.

Rogers and Gaetz got into a near brawl on the House floor last January after a contentious vote for House speaker. As this story reported: ‘It was a blink-and-you-might-have-missed-it moment — until the images went viral.

Rep. Rogers, a Republican from Alabama, rushed toward Rep. Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, to get in his face for not voting for Kevin McCarthy as House speaker. A Republican from North Carolina, Richard Hudson, grabbed Rogers around the face to pull him away from Gaetz. Rogers called it a “big nothing burger” at the time.

I get it. Gaetz, quite the charmer, has said “Abortion activists are too fat and ugly to get pregnant.” The dude has a way of rubbing people the wrong way. Truth is, rubbing people the wrong way is one of the reasons he is under a House Ethics Committee investigation – for allegations that he may have engaged in sexual misconduct (with a 17-year-old,) illegal drug use and accepted improper gifts.

The bipartisan committee is made up of an equal number of Republicans and Democrats. If a lawmaker is under investigation by the committee and resigns, is expelled or leaves Congress, the Ethics Committee immediately ceases any ongoing investigation.

Well, guess what? Gaetz resigned from Congress on Wednesday after being picked as Trump’s attorney general nominee.

No wonder heads are exploding in Washington.
