JD Crowe: After more than 9 months, Tuberville’s water finally broke

This is an opinion cartoon and column.

Good ol’ Tommy Tuberville. He’s always a toon waiting to happen.

Alabama’s senior U.S. Senator keeps building his reputation as the dumbest man in America. Last week, he reportedly told his GOP colleagues at a private luncheon, “I got y’all into this mess, I’m gonna get you out.”

The mess he was talking about was his military promotions blockade he started last February as a protest against the Pentagon’s abortion policy that allows travel expenses for military members seeking abortions in states where it remains legal.

The only guy who thought this was a good idea was good ol’ Sen. Tuberville. On Tuesday, he finally backed down from this unpopular stunt, ending his blockade of hundreds of military promotions, clearing the way for hundreds to gain approval.

President Biden praised the Senate for confirming 425 military nominations Tuesday evening after Sen. Tuberville lifted his “pointless” and “politically motivated” holds on the posts.

“I hope no one forgets what he did,” Biden said in a statement, referring to the holds put in place by Alabama’s senior senator for 10 months over a Defense Department policy reimbursing service members’ travel expenses for abortions.

“These confirmations are long overdue, and should never have been held up in the first place,” Biden said. “Our service members are the backbone of our country and deserve to receive the pay and promotions they have earned. In the end, this was all pointless.”

Here’s a thoughtful opinion piece from The Washington Post asking for a penalty flag to be thrown against Tuberville, a former Auburn football coach.
